The island is the biggest in the country ( 115 kms2 ) and is located in the National Park. It´s formation a coral shelf in the sea, dotted with caves and 3 lagoons : los flamencos, De Secucho and El canto de la playa is unique. It was once the refuge of the tribal chief Cotubanama who fled the infamous Higuey massacre, and was according to legend held prisoner in one of Saona´s caves. Tourists cannot help but be impressed by the finest view of dense forests of coco palms lining the white sand beaches. |
